Discover how we rebuilt our career support process into a guided, one-on-one journey that takes students from their first class to their first job offer.
When Null Academy first opened its doors, our career support looked like most academies': a placement cell that shared job postings and hoped for the best. It worked for some students, but too many talented graduates were left applying blindly, with no feedback and no clear next step.
The Tipping Point
As our student numbers grew, we noticed a pattern. Students who struggled weren't lacking skills — they were lacking guidance. They didn't know how to translate coursework into a resume, how to answer behavioral questions, or how to follow up after an interview. In a job market where first impressions matter enormously, this was a breaking point.
"A great skill set means nothing if a student doesn't know how to present it. Career support isn't a bonus — it's the bridge between learning and earning."
We realized that improving our courses alone could only take students so far. We needed to fundamentally change how we supported them after the last class ended. We needed to build a real career journey, not just a job board.
The Transition to Guided Career Support
Our team spent months redesigning our placement process from the ground up. This involved several key changes:
- Personal Career Mapping: Every student now gets a one-on-one session to map their goals against real market roles.
- Resume & Portfolio Reviews: Dedicated counsellors review and rework every student's resume and portfolio before it goes out.
- Mock Interview Practice: Structured mock interviews with real feedback, run by mentors who've hired before.
The Results
The impact of this redesign was immediate and encouraging. Our student placement rate rose significantly, and time-to-hire dropped for most graduates. Students now report feeling far more confident walking into interviews, knowing exactly how to talk about their projects and their journey.
Helping students build real careers is an ongoing journey. We're currently expanding our mentor network and building more industry partnerships, and we'll share those updates in a future post.
